Designing a Brand Logo
Here is a PowerPoint where I research into existing logos and the meaning and history behind them. I researched into existing famous logos and the meaning behind them, the history of logos such as who invented them, and I even dove into five fascinating stories behind logos. I also researched into trademarking logos. After doing some research, I also tried to design my own concept logos, some of them are digital meanwhile others are sketched. By researching into existing logos I have been able to further my understanding of logos and how they came to be. I got this information from Google, Forbes and Wikipedia.
First Drafts of My Personal Logo
Based on my research and sketches, I went through several stages of designing and changing the logo to meet my own requirements. As I went through the process of designing of designing my logo, my ideas changed and adapted. For example my shape changed from a rectangle to a circle, and I added more detail as time went on. I then experimented with colour schemes. Because of this I know have more than one to use. These will be used for different functions such as business cards and watermarks. I also developed the overall quality of my design, by making them more and more flashy.
How my logo works as a watermark
For the purpose of the watermark I removed the background. I can also change the colour to suit the background of the image.
By changing the colour of the watermark I am able to make the watermark blend in with the photo. If I didn't do this the watermark might end up taking away attention from the actual image itself. The logo is quite subtle and it doesn't overload the picture. The only problem is that the logo can become quite blurry, This is something I will be able to fix when making my final design. I will make sure to improve the images overall appearance and resolution.
In this image I changed the opacity of the watermark to make it blend in with the image more. In my opinion it looks better than having the image there in it's full effect, because it doesn't get in the way too much. I made this image on Picsart and I feel the most comfortable using Picsart. I use Picsart for most of my images, it has some really helpful features. I have various different colours and borders I can pair with my watermark to make it suit a certain image.
Here is an example of my logo overlaying a video, as you can see it fades in at the beginning. I did this because I think it looks smoother and more professional. I also lowered the image opacity because I think it blends in better with the video. If you look at TV watermarks such as BBC and ITV they also lower the opacity of their logos. They do this so it blends in with the product and doesn't have a big impact on the video itself.
As you can see I have made some minor changes to my final design, I have put Anonymous Archer all on one line. I did this because I thought having the archer at the bottom next to media, editing and journalism makes it seem like a skill.
So, I made a google form where I put all three logos on the form and asked people to tell me which one they thought was the best and why. 100% of the respondents said that logo three was the best, which reassures me that I have spent my time working on the most effective logo.
From the next questions responses, I am very pleased that the majority of respondents liked my bright colour scheme and thought it was "eye catching". I am also happy that my information hasn't went unnoticed, with some respondents saying it makes my logo look "professional".
In question 3 I asked them whether or not my logo looked like it was for a media brand, and 100% of my respondents said yes. I am relieved that my logo looks like it represents a media company and my time was well spent. I think it is really important to make sure people know what your logo is about just in case they get confused. It also means people are more likely to commission your product, because they have a better idea of who you are and what you do. Due to this I feel as if I am right to continue with this logo.
Here are my different colour variants, I went with a black and silver one and an inverted version. I think these variants make good watermarks and blend in well with videos and images. I also created a red and green version because I think this one is very eye catching and can draw attention to my brand. I made these different variants on Picsart by utilizing the effects tool.
Evaluation of my logo
Upon developing my graphics design skills throughout this project, I believe my final product is up to industry standard and professional looking for the type of work I am involved with. My different variations of the logos colour scheme make my logo very versatile. I can make my logo blend in or stand out.
There is no real reason on why my logo has a neon circle surrounding it, I just liked the design. This logo speaks about me, my professionalism and my creativity. The subheadings underneath my title "media, editing and journalism" also give the consumer a good idea of what I do and it specifically breaks down which parts of media I specialize in. I added the headings so people know my logo is for a media brand. These skills are wanted over the likes of paperwork and researching. I also believe it was a good idea to make different variations of my logo. This will help prevent any sort of colour clashing with other pieces of media. For example I made inverted versions of my black and silver logo.
The title above my subheadings helps the logo maintain shape and not look disjointed. Although having everything in a straight line may work for a sign (Example shop sign), I don't think it would work very well as a overlay or on a business card. I think the lack of structure would take up too much space on the screen.
