My Work Experience - A Love Supreme
So, I have been doing my work placement at popular Sunderland fanzine A Love Supreme. Whilst I've been there, I have written dozens of articles ranging from match previews, how we've fared against the opposition and transcribing press conference's. I even did some articles about the 2022 Qatar World Cup. By writing these articles I have developed my journalism skills, and built my own portfolio of articles. I began taking an interest in journalism in 2021, when I created my Instagram account Anonymous_SAFC. I wanted a place to give my opinions on SAFC, and A Love Supreme has helped give me a platform to voice my opinion. due to my work placement, I have being going into ALS every Friday, and I have done so since October.
This post is one of my "How We've Fared" posts, these go into detail about previous games against the up coming opposition. I use the Stat Cat to gain all the information about these games, it's a website that has a saved copy of every single Sunderland game. Firstly, I find out how many times SAFC have played the opposition, as well as how many wins, draws and defeats they have picked up. For example, Over the last 135 years, Sunderland have played Blackburn Rovers 144 times and have secured 61 wins, 32 draws and 51 defeats.
Here is a link to my articles if you wish to read them.
Here is one of my match previews, this one is Hull City. All of my previews follow this format, I personally kike to present a balanced argument, so I do some research on the opposition before I start writing. The first paragraph I do is about the opposition, I write about their season so far and their current situation. For example, I will talk about their league position, manager, players etc.
After I summarize the opposition, I do a paragraph about Sunderland. In this paragraph, I talk about SAFC's current situation. This can range from quotes from the manager, information about players, and what problems could be ahead. This gives the reader a brief update before they watch the match.
Next I give my prediction, I tell the audience my score line, and how I think the game will play out. For example, "Preston will sit back and be difficult to breakdown." After I give my brief prediction for the game, I talk about my predicted 11's. These are the team sheets for the game.

I then pick out 5 interesting games against the opposition, and do a paragraph talking about them. This gives the reader a better understanding of the previous clashes between the two clubs.
Finally, this is one of my transcribed posts, this one is from Kristjaan Speakman's mid season update. Firstly, I would load up the interview, as well as a Google Doc. I would then write the interview word for word, this is so I don't miss any key information. Once the writing is done, I let Daniel (Works For ALS) break it down into pieces and upload it to the website. This makes the article more digestible for the consumer.
As well as doing articles, I also sold some merchandise for the company at the College Christmas Fair. I went into ALS on the morning, packed the bags and got a taxi to college. I worked with Lewis (Work Experience) and sold various different items. The items we sold were scarfs, hats, badges and mackem dictionaries. We raised a lot of money, and Martyn (My Boss) was very pleased. This experience helped develop my communication skills, and it gave me a better idea of how businesses work.
Conclusion
In conclusion, my time at ALS has helped develop my journalism skills, and give me a better understanding of the industry. By writing various articles I have been able to build a portfolio of different articles, that I can show case to a consumer if I want to apply for a journalism job.
I have also gained experience of what it's like to be in the work place, this is crucial experience I need in order to be a functional member of society.
I am really grateful for the opportunity ALS have gave me, and I hope to have more good times there in the future.
