Personal Statement Research (Part 1)
Here is A PowerPoint where I research into personal statements and how to make them stand out. In this presentation I dive into what not to do, as well as the importance of a personal statement and how a good personal statement can impact your chances of getting a job over someone else. This research has helped expand my knowledge on personal statements and I will make sure to apply the tips when writing my own.
- Brainstorm themes or stories you want to focus on.
- It should be personal.
- Answer the prompt.
- Show don't tell.
- Just start writing.
Ideally, your personal statement should be no more than around 150 words (or four or five lines of your CV). Any more than this and you run the risk of rambling and taking up valuable space. Remember: it’s a summary, not a cover letter. So keep it concise, pertinent and to the point.
Preparation
Here are some notes I have took in preparation for writing my personal statement. I have talked about things such as my experience within the industry, my mindset and even my work experience. This will help me remember everything I want to write about.

Here we have an example of a personal statement, one thing I noticed straight away was that this person has put everything on one page. This is something I aim to do when constructing my own. UCAS doesn't allow you statement to be too long, so I will have to make sure mine is as efficient as possible. This person has included why they are interested in media, and that it has been a big part of their life. I will make sure to talk about my past in content creation when writing my own. They have also talked about their education background, and courses they have studied before. Since this is my first course I can't speak about courses I've done in the past. As well as this, they have also talked their strengths which is a a good way to sell yourself. In mine, I will talk about the strengths I posses, such as editing, cinematography, and journalism. It's all good information to include. I've noticed that personal statement's don't include images or colourful text's, so I will not need to worry about the design. On this one, they talk about how David Attenborough inspired them, personally I'd rather talk about the things I've produced myself. I'm doing that because it will give the reader a better idea about me.
